COMMONLY ASKED QUESTIONS

WHAT ARE ALL THE LETTERS BEHIND A THERAPIST'S NAME?

Most letters behind our therapist's names have to do with their licensure.  Before obtaining a license, each therapist must graduate with a Master's Degree in related field.  After that, therapists will use different titles depending on their area of expertise.  The following are common licensures you'll find at Courage Mountain

  • LCSW = Licensed Clinical Social Worker

  • LMFT = Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist

  • LCMHC = Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor

Tip: If the letters are missing the "L" this most likely means they are within the first two years of being a therapist and are under the supervision of our clinical director.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A MENTAL HEALTH THERAPIST, PSYCHOLOGIST AND A PSYCHIATRIST?

Therapists, psycholgists and psychiatrists are all mental health professionals and are experts in treating the mind.

A mental health therapist has a master's degree and is trained to evaluate and treat mental illness.  Counseling and psychotherapy (talk therapy) are provided.

A psychologist has a doctoral degree in psychology.  Psychologists are not doctors and often provide counseling, psychotherapy and psychological testing.

A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who is trained to differentiate between mental health problems and medical conditions.  A psychiatrist can prescribe medications, but sometimes a combination of medication and psychotherapy is needed.

HOW LONG ARE APPOINTMENTS?

The standard appointment time is 50 minutes spent with your therapist.  Longer sessions may be requested in advance and will have additional charges.

HOW OFTEN WILL WE MEET?

From your first appointment, we will reserve a weekly recurring time with your therapist.  Meeting weekly will help you get momentum to tackle your goals.  As you get closer to your goals, it may make more sense to meet less often. You can discuss changes and frequency with your therapist at any time.
